R. clavata used to be common in the North Sea. However, in the 1950s the species disappeared from the Wadden Sea and in the 1960s from the Delta waters in Zeeland (EcoMare, 2001). Less common off the Dutch coast (Nijssen & de Groot, 1987, p. 64), but nowadays almost disappeared (Nijssen, 2001, p. 45). Egg-capsules of R. clavata are regularly found on the Dutch coast, although less numerous in recent years (Bor, 1998, p. 31).
