| Order: Carcharhiniformes Family: Carcharhinidae Genus: Prionace Cantor, 1849 Prionace glauca (Linnaeus, 1758) En: Blue shark - Du: Blauwe haai |
Rare species in the Dutch North Sea region. Dutch fishguides question (Nijssen & de Groot, 1987, p. 196) or ignore (Nijssen, 2001) the presence of P. glauca along the Dutch coast. There are, however, two reliable records of strandings.
Stranding data:
| 2 November 1998 | A living female with a length of 220 cm and a weight of approximately 60 kg washed ashore in the harbour of Nes on Ameland island (Dutch Wadden Sea). The shark was brought to the aquarium of Natuurmuseum Ameland. Unfortunately it turned out to be impossible to keep the shark alive (Perk, 1999, p. 173, photos p. 174). |
| 20 December 1972 | A young male with a length of 118.5 cm (162 cm) washed ashore on the beach of the island of Terschelling. The shark was dead, but in fresh condition and presumably died on or nearby the beach (Nijssen & de Groot, 1987, p. 196; Perk, 1999, p. 176). |
