Cetorhinus maximus (Gunnerus, 1765)

Uncommon species in Dutch coastal waters; sometimes in summer mainly immature specimens enter the North Sea (Nijssen & de Groot, 1987, p. 54; Nijssen, 2001, p. 34). Since the 1950s, basking sharks are caught on an average of one per year in the Dutch part of the North Sea (EcoMare, 2001).

Sighting data:

June 1992 Sighting off Camperduin, estimated length 4 m (EcoMare, 2001).

Stranding data:

11 December 2004 Female with a length of 3.65 m and a weight of 250 kg washed ashore on the beach near Petten. The shark was dead, but in fresh condition. The shark was brought to the aquarium of Fort Kijkduin in Den Helder and put on public display (Fort Kijkduin, 13-12-2004, photos).

Fisheries data:

13 May 2000 Specimen with a length of 4.5 m was caught, no further details (Fort Kijkduin, 16-05-2000).
4 December 1997 Specimen with a length of plus 5 m and a weight of 600 kg was caught by the Dutch vessel TX49, no further details (EcoMare, 2001).
31 Ocober 1997 The weekly magazine 'Visserijnieuws' reported the catch of a 'porbeagle pup' weighing 325 kg by the Dutch vessel VLI27. Considering the weight, is was probably a young basking shark. No further details (EcoMare, 2001).
November 1996 Specimen with a length of 4 m and a weight of 210 kg was caught by the Dutch vessel SL14 near the Klaverbank, no further details (EcoMare, 2001).
October 1995 Specimen with a length of 3.75 m and a weight of 250 kg was caught by the Scottisch vessel PD63 on the Klaverbank, no further details (EcoMare, 2001).
October 1995 Specimen with a length of 3.5 m and a weight of 310 kg caught by the Dutch vessel UK382, no further details (EcoMare, 2001).
October 1994 Specimen with a weight of 450 kg caught by the Dutch vessel GO31, no further details (EcoMare, 2001).
15 October 1970 Specimen (female ?) with a length of approximately 5 meters caught in the southern part of the North Sea lnown as Markhams Hole, south of Silver Pit, by the pair trawling Dutch vessels UK141/UK271 (de Groot, 1970: p. 448-449, photo; de Groot, 1979: photo p. 424).
