To date 24 species of sharks and rays have been recorded from the coastal waters of the Netherlands. Sharks and rays were never abundant in the Dutch coastal waters, but nowadays most species of sharks and rays are rare or have disappeared due to intensive fisheries in the North Sea. Most sharks in the North Sea are smaller species, such as Squalus acanthias and Scyliorhinus canicula. Every once in a while large sharks are caught, such as Lamna nasus, Alopias vulpinus and Cetorhinus maximus.
